Stratagem Mac App

Company: Stratagem

What did you set out to achieve? To create an app for tracking projects, free from the distractions of the browser. Being a native Mac app, we could do a lot of interesting things (such as using native notifications) that web based apps can’t do.

How did you achieve that goal? When it came to the visuals, we wanted to make it feel like a powerful app that could handle any task you threw at it, but at the same time feel easy to use. A lot of my time was spent in user testing, in order to refine the UI and make sure it could handle anything users demanded of it.

What challenges did you face? Project management apps are inherently complex. Also, everyone has a different opinion on how they should work. Taking all that complexity and packaging it in an app that feels light is extremely difficult. That was my primary challenge.

If you could go back, what would you change? I think I’d start with an iOS app. Starting on the desktop gave me a lot of room for complex flows. The constraint of iOS would have been good for the app. It would have helped me refine my work even further.
